I fell into an online discussion about hopes for the romance genre in 2024 and what came up again and again was Viking romance novels. I can’t predict what will be coming out new from romance authors, but I can mention some older Viking romance novels that I enjoyed.
Viking Romance Novels…
The most famous Viking romance author in my early romance days was Sandra Hill. She had a few Viking series.
The Reluctant Viking (Viking I Book 1) and The Last Viking (Viking II series Book 1) and of course Viking Navy SEALs (6 books series.) Torolf Magnusson and his team of Navy SEALs are cruising along a Norwegian fjord like bleepin’ tourists when their reproduction Viking longship wrecks. They somehow find themselves back in the tenth century outside a medieval version of a woman’s shelter. And the women there are trying everything in their erotic repertoire to lure the men into their bed furs. Hoo-yah! Except for Hilda who wants nothing to do with Torolf… Hill’s Viking romance novels are sensual and humorous.
And we can not forget the classics by Johanna Lindsey. Her stories are throwbacks to the earlier days of romance. But if you are looking for some rough and tumble Viking romance novels, try Viking Haardrad Family (3 book series). Lovely and dauntless, abducted by invaders from across an icy sea, Lady Brenna vowed vengeance — swearing no Viking brute would be her master…no barbarian would enslave her noble Celtic heart.
Even More Reading Options…
If you are looking for something a bit more realistic in your Norsemen, then I suggest Susan Squires’ Danegeld and Danelaw. War swept England, and the dark ages grew darker as Vikings put Saxon strongholds to the torch. The conquering horde found Epona, daughter of the goddess, on the hill beneath the sign of the white horse. There she had lived, awaiting the man who was fated to give her a child. One truth was now evident: In Viking fire burned her destiny. Susan wrote things other than Viking romance novels, my favorite being Body Electric.
Lastly, if you are looking for a romp, try my time travel, Club Valhalla. It is part of a time travel series. Viking warrior, Tranum, died in battle. Instead of waking up in Valhalla he found himself in Club Valhalla, a tacky, modern-day beach resort in California. Neither Tranum nor the resort were ever the same again. The best Viking time-travel comedy-romance since… come to think of it, when was the last time you read a decent Viking time-travel comedy romance?
If you’re looking for more serious time-travel romance by Melanie Jackson, try Night Visitor or Dominion.
Not into Viking romance novels? Prefer Fallen Angels? Or vampires? Don’t worry, I have you covered.
