The dark and atmospheric settings, combined with intense emotional plots, create an irresistible allure for some readers. The Classics…
No discussion of Gothic romance is complete without mentioning Charlotte Brontë’s Jane Eyre. This novel follows the journey of Jane, an orphaned girl who becomes a governess at Thornfield Hall. There, she meets the enigmatic Mr. Rochester, and their complex relationship unfolds amidst secrets and supernatural elements. Brontë masterfully combines a haunting atmosphere with deep emotional connections.
Another must-read classic is Emily Brontë’s Wuthering Heights. This tale of doomed love between Heathcliff and Catherine is set on the desolate moors of England and the novel’s dark, brooding setting and the intense, often destructive, emotions of its characters epitomize Gothic romance.
But since we covered these classics in high school, let’s move a little closer to the modern era and look at the modern gothics and the authors who write them.

For those who prefer contemporary settings with a Gothic twist, consider Diane Setterfield’s The Thirteenth Tale. The story revolves around a reclusive author, Vida Winter, who reveals her dark family secrets to a biographer. The eerie atmosphere and intricate plot make it a gripping read– and my husband loved it so you know it’s good.
Victoria Holt, a pseudonym for Eleanor Hibbert, Philippa Carr, and Jean Plaidy, was a prolific author of Gothic romance novels. Mistress of Mellyn is one of her best-known works. Set in a Cornish mansion, it tells the story of a governess who uncovers the mysteries of the house and its inhabitants. Holt’s ability to weave suspense and romance is unparalleled and I am still waiting for King of the Castle to come out in e-format.
If you’re looking for something more modern, try The Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafón. Set in post-war Barcelona, it follows a young boy who discovers a mysterious book by an obscure author. As he delves into the author’s life, he uncovers dark secrets and a love story shrouded in mystery.
Even More Gothic Romance Books…
Gothic romance fans will also enjoy Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier. This novel tells the tale of a young bride who moves into her husband’s mansion, only to find herself overshadowed by the memory of his first wife, Rebecca. The suspense and eerie atmosphere make it a timeless favorite.

If you’re in the mood for something a bit different, try The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova. This novel blends Gothic romance with historical fiction as it follows a young woman uncovering her father’s secret past and his connection to Dracula. This one has paranormal overtones.
